Bunny ok?

Post by Glenda Adam » Thu, 24 Jan 2002 14:07:01

Our 3 year old mini-lop bunny, Britches, has been having some "output"
problems the last few days.  Instead of her normal, relatively dry
droppings, she'll have a big mass thats very wet and sticky :(  She
seems to be better for a while (normal output), then she'll have another
bad episode.  This has been going on for a 2-3 days, and we've made sure
she's got plenty of timothy hay, pellets, and water.  We've tried to cut
back on the treats in case that might be part of it, but so far not a
huge difference.

The only thing I can think of different in her diet is we ran out of
papaya tablets (which we normally give daily), and are waiting to get
some more in the mail.

Any ideas?  Should we take her to the vet?

thanks,
Glenda

Glenda,

I think you are correct to be concerned about Britches.

You could try eliminating the pellets entirely in favor of a hay-only
diet (no treats, really!  diarrhea or even almost diarrhea can be
serious in rabbits.)

But I wouldn't wait more than another day or two to takw her to the vet
if it doesn't stop.

I hesitate to frighten you, but it is possible that it could be the
coccidia (sp?) parasite  that can be fatal.

Good luck and I hope you come back and tell us it was nothing.

Glenda,

What type and how many pellets do you feed Britches?
