Need Advice - Disabled Bunny - Lisa Rotunni

My 6 year old mini-lop had surgery 8 weeks ago for mammary tumors
and uterine cancer.  (I was not aware when she was young that she
should be spayed to prevent these problems!)  She is recovering well
from the surgery except for one thing: one of her back legs apparently
suffered some nerve damage during the surgery and she cannot use it
at all.

I am told that this sort of paralysis often goes away after awhile
and function returns, but that it can take 6 months!  I'm wondering
if anyone has seen a bunny recover from paralysis like this, how long
it took, and if anything can be done to help?

I'd be grateful for any stories or suggestions.  It's very sad to
see her lying in her cage on the same side all the time instead of
hopping around the room.

Many thanks,
Lisa.

I've not heard of this occuring during a routine spay, but perhaps the vet
had to go further looking for cancer.  If it is just nerve damage, I would
suspect that she would recover.  It took six months for the nerve in my
little finger to grow back after a cat bite, I don't know why nerves
wouldn't regenerate in rabbits too.

In the meantime, you're most urgent problem might be to keep her from
getting urine all over her legs.  If this is a problem, contact me via

I am so sorry to hear this... I hope that it goes away.. Maybe you could
call other vets in the area and ask them if they have had any success
stories..
