Update from the Ricketts Warren

Post by Joe » Sun, 24 Mar 2013 08:33:04

Hi guys,

I know Debbie checks the Facebook APR account quite a bit but we`ve missed
being on the group here. For some reason we could not get our posts to go
through for the longest while. Some news from here.

Tabitha, our little Dutch cutie (now almost 7), has something going on with
her hind end. One morning, when I went to feed the crew, I noticed she
seemed very stiff in the back end and one of her legs was sticking out to
the side. She was off her food for a day or so but has been eating great
ever since. When I give her the freedom of the rec room, she gets around but
her back legs are stiff. I don`t think there was any injury and it looks
almost like she had bad arthritis without the pain. I took her to the vet
and she was stymied as well. We tried her on a course of batril and some
pain meds just in case but the stiffness is still there. Other than that she
seems great so it`s a mystery. We are taking a wait and see approach and if
there`s any change for the negative we will have the vet do some more in
depth investigations.

On  a happier note, two of our bunnies are now models for a photographer
friend. She owns and operates a gallery and is now getting into photography.
She has a little boy so Easter is a big thing for her. So she asked whether
she could `borrow` a couple of the buns for her to use in her shoots with
her clients. Well, we thought Josie and Teddy would be a good choice since
they are closely bonded and, being dwarves, more suitable for the kids. She
did a trial run for a mutual friend and her two kids and both buns were
great. She has now borrowed them for the weekend and apparently everything
is going great. Her and her husband have taken a big liking to them and were
half serious when they asked if they could adopt them. She knew we used to
help out with the Rescue so she may have thought they were fosters. We
politely said no and will encourage her to check out the Rescue as they have
some great buns there looking for homes.

Bonding - we try so hard to bond buns and it never seems to go smoothly.
When we don`t try, the little imps go and do it themselves. After Tiffany
passed, we successfully bonded Josie and Teddy with Pavlina. Their living
quarters are right next to our little party boy, Bugsy. One day I had the
doors to both enclosures open at the same time. The next thing you know,
they are going back and forth like long lost friends. Surprisingly, it seems
Bugsy and Teddy are becoming best buds. I would have thought the boy-girl
thing to be more likely. I haven`t moved them in together but when the
weather improves I will try them outdoors together for more extended periods
to see how the four of them get along. I tried bonding Bugsy with a couple
of the other girls after Honey dies but it never worked out so this has come
as a bit of a surprise.

Hope this post has not been too long but it`s been a while.

BTW, Zoe sends a shout out to all her APR friends and says it will be 7
years in June since we joined this fabulous group. As I said, we have missed
being on here and now that the posts seem to be working, we look forward to
keeping in touch more regularly.

Hey Carla,

Yep, it's strange with Tabitha. The last couple of days she seems a little
better in getting around so I now wonder whether she did hurt herself. We
will continue to monitor her closely.

Update from the Ricketts Warren

Post by Rich » Tue, 26 Mar 2013 12:07:51

Tabitha will be in our thoughts and prayers.  Mr. Pepper has severe arthritis and has very little strenght in his back legs.  Today he started dragging his left leg when trying to move about. It hasn't affected his appetite but is on pain meds.  We will also be making a visit to his doctors this week.

Mr. Patches ('till we meet again)

Thanks for that entertaining post, Joe. I'm sorry to hear about Tabatha
having hind end stiffness. I hope your vet can work out what happened and
hopefully fix it.

I'm glad you can get on the newsgroups again. I've had trouble in the past
with Teranews but things are working well now.

I'm also glad to hear about the bonding success. That's something I never
succeeded at.

BTW, I first came on APR in 1996. The wonderful advice and friendly folks
encouraged me to adopt Gideon the next year. Until then, I never knew what
charming and fascinating animals rabbits are.

Thanks, Joe, for doing good work in educating people. I hope that couple you
met for the photo shoot will do their homework and adopt a needy bunny from
a shelter. I blogged at www.bruceatchison.blogspot.com about the annual
Easter rip off and I hope that gets non-rabbit folks thinking too. When
people learn what amazing animals rabbits are, they realize how wrong public
perceptions of them are.

Hi Rich,
Tabitha seems to be improving. We're sorry to hear about Mr. Pepper. We are
going through the same thing with our Dalmatian, Romeo, who we adopted a few
years ago. His mobility is decreasing and lots of times he needs help
getting up if he goes down on all fours. It's not easy seeing them get
older. We will keep Mr. Pepper in our prayers.

Thanks for the update, Joe. It's good to know what's going on at each
other's places. Deborah is doing fine, though she seems to be tired of the
same old hay and pellets. The problem is that vegies give her blobby poops.
I'll have to ask around here to find out where I can get some Benebac for
her.

Joe,

It was absolutely great to read your post. So glad you were able to get
through.

BTW, I love, love, love your Christmas letter with the details on all
the pets.  Just can't get enough of that good stuff.

Hi to all the human and animal members of your warren from the Brooklyn
gang with hopes that Tabitha has a quick recovery from her mystery malady.

Nona
