My bunny Gustave Klimt has had some
strange skin condition which no vet can
seem
to figure out... It is really bad around
the base of the tail.. and moves up...
I have been treating him with equus
shampoo which is a fungal thing and it
seems to help... but no doc knows what
it is...

they don't think its ringworm,
It is not that crawling mange thing..
and it is not contagious otherwise I
would be covered along with the cats...

I am clue less..

Second, while i was bathing Gustave
today I noticed a subcutaneous ... lump?

It isn't hard and doesn't feel like on
large lump but maybe several smaller
ones...
It is located in the right side of his
dewlap.. and feels very fatty..
any clues??
Goosy is going to the vets tomorrow any
ways.. but I am a little nervous.

Hello Hilary,

I'm glad you're rabbit is going to the vet tomorrow. Sometimes rabbits
get fatty deposits that are like little lumps (which are harmless), but
the vet will want to make sure that they're not abscesses or something
else.

As for the losing hair, how old is your rabbit? Is he a long-haired
rabbit and is he shedding? Sometimes when they shed they can get a few
bald patches. Are there any white flakes on the skin? Fur mites usually
leave little pieces of skin that look like dandruff. The vet needs to do
a skin scrapping if they haven't already, to see if your rabbit has fur
mites or even lice. Fur mites are treated with 1 or 2 shots of
Ivermectin, 10 days apart.

Do you have a good rabbit vet? If your vet is not very experienced with
rabbits or you just want a second opinion, there are some vet refferals
at www.rabbit.org.

Good luck tomorrow!

Maybe mites?  Ask your vet (and look for a vet with lots of bunny experiance)
about getting the bun an Ivermecton injection.  that helps with stuff like
that... parasites, etc.

I haven't had experience with the health problems, but I wanted you to know
that I'm sending those good bunny vibes that we pass back and forth here on
apr.  =)

Also....I LOVE the name!  Gustave Klimt!  Love it!   I'm an art major and
think that when I get more pets, I'm going to start naming them after famous
artists too.  =)   I've just heard too many cute names like that.

You should ask your vet for a skin swab/scraping so they can figure out
what it is.  It could be bacterial, parasitic, viral who knows?
A skin scraping would help.

well bunny has had 3 skin scrapings in
the last...
3 months..
still nothing.
They think the swelling in his dewlap is
lymphnoids..
she did a tap on on particular spot and
saw nothing unusual...

what ever it is, I guess his body has
finally decided to react to it..

does anyone have any idea what I can
give him to boost his immune system?

I am not usually one to subscribe to herbal treatments, BUT . . . .
it was recommended to me a while back for an injured bunny, too young for
antibiotics, to give him Echinachia (sp?)
It's supposed to boost the immune system in low dosages and act as an
antibiotic in higher dosages.
Thumper was just 3 weeks old, so he only got 2 drops a day but it did seem to
make a difference.  He was able to hold the infection in his injured foot at
bay until he was old enough to have antibiotics to clear it on up.

I'm just wondering if I should give some of that to Jasmine while she tries
to fight this runny nose thing she's got going on.

Does it come in pill form?   How do you administer that?  Crush it up?  Is
it chewable?   Is it a liquid?
How much should I give a 5-6 lb rabbit?

I'd appreciate it!  =)

Hi Mary,

I gave Echinicea to Buns for two months during his illness. I would get
it in capsule form, open the capsule and put about a third of the
contents on a banana. If I remember correctly, humans were supposed to
take about 6-9 capsules a day of the dosage I bought. I don't know how
many mg's a rabbit technically should have.

I was curious, does your daughter take her rabbit off the Echinacea
every so often? I know with the people dose, you're supposed to take it
for 4-6 weeks and then be off of it for a week. It seems that we build
up an immunity to it.

Yes,  I agree, Echinacea/goldseal is an excellent herb for the immune system.
It comes is flavors, and 2-5 drops in the water bottle would probably be
enough.  Use it for several weeks.  My daughter has a bunnie that had chronic
respiratory problems from the time she got her.  After several months of
Baytril, and it would come back when she stopped using it, she started using
Echinacea, The respitatory problem has cleared up.But she keeps the bunnie on
it all the time just to make it doesn't come back.  Echinacea is much less
costly than Baytril!

Hi Mary,

You can get Echinacea in pill, capsule and liquid form.  The liquid form
would be probably the best for a rabbit put into their drinking water or
disguised in a treat.  Apparently it tastes quite bad so you may have to
disguise it!  As for the dose, I am not sure, but maybe you could work
it out from the human dose e.g. from a 150lb human to 5lb rabbit, divide
by 30??  Or maybe just something small, like a small drop per day.
