Pool Liner as Pond Liner

Post by Laura Iverso » Thu, 18 May 2000 04:00:00

I recently got a good deal on a used pool liner (free), and I was wondering
whether I should use it as my pond liner.  I am planning a 6' x 8' pond with
deepest spot 18".    If there are major disadvantages I will send the pool
liner to its final destination (garbage dump) and go with and EPDM liner.

I am not sure what the pool liner material is composed of, although it was a
standard above ground pool.

Any advice or experience is appreciated.

Thanks,

Craig

It's probably PVC.  It's not as durable as EPDM.  You might consider Permalon.

Blue plastic type material of the pools sold at KMart/WalMart?  My pond is
lined with this type liner.  My kids couldn't afford EPDM or Permalon so this
is what they bought.  It's in it's 3rd year and will need replacing probably
next year.  Where it's in the water it's OK, but where the water evaporation
exposes it, it is starting to dry out.  So you can use it will good results,
but be prepared to replace it in 3 to 5 years.

You've gotten the experience word from Karen. IMHO, after all the work that
went into mine, I'm glad I don't have to redo it in 5 years, as that would
be this year for me. Ugh! Dividing and repotting the plants is enough for
me. ~ jan
