Koi Pond Keeper

I visited a member of the Rocky Mountain Koi Club yesterday to buy Water Hyacinths. She was
selling them for $1.00 each. I was quite surprised at what I saw. She had four ponds, all above
ground and all shaded with sun shade screening in a yard full of shade trees. The only plant
life was hyacinths. The Hyacinths were deep green and very large. Much larger and greener than I
have in my pond and also much nicer than I have found in the local nurseries and pond stores (at
$3.00 to $4.00 ea). Her ponds were shallow at about 15" and loaded with show quality large Koi
up to 20". No green algae here!

She also keeps a solar pool cover over the larger pond during the winter with a tank heater set
high enough to keep the Hyacinths alive.

Now my ponds are in full sun probably 9 or more hours per day. Only shade is from plants in the
pond. My Hyacinths turn yellow-green in a very short time and appear stunted in growth. Pond
depth is up to 36". I have lots of algae, even with several bio-filters and lots of plant
growth, though it has subsided somewhat this week. Of course my lillys love it with 5 of them in
bloom today.
