Can I put goldfish and koi together in my pond 11x13x2.5+waterfall.
Currently I have 5 koi and 7 gold fish.  Somebody told me that goldfish have
too many diseases and may kill the koi?

Lots of people have both gf and koi in their ponds together.  I think you can
just as easily buy a koi that may be sick and contaminate the pond.  Thats why
its recommended to quarantine all new fish before adding them to your pond.

My gf and koi all pal around together so they enjoy sharing the pond with their
cousins.

Nonsense.  The goldfish and Koi get along great together.  I have never
seen a problem or heard of any from the members of our pond club.  As
far as diseases go, whatever your goldfish can catch, the Koi can catch,
the same stuff is always in the pond and in the air.  Whether or not
fish become susceptible to them is dependent on your ponds balance and
the stress on the fish.

Of course some fish may introduce parasites and organisims that would
not be normally found in your pond. What I might be more careful about
is where you get your goldfish and Koi from!  Goldfish, especially
feeders, are often kept in marginal conditions in many stores. Koi,
being more expensive are usually kept in better conditions.  I would
suggest that it is much easier to have something introduced to your pond
via a goldfish then a Koi.  And before anyone jumps on me, this is just
an unproven theory of mine. Koi can introduce stuff into a pond just as
readily as goldfish, but in the average local store, I think the
goldfish are more likely to have something due to conditions, not any
inborn susceptibility.

If you have had the fish for some time and know they are all healthy, there is
no reason for seperation.  Koi and goldfish can do well together.

My koi and my goldfish are very happy together.  I don't see any reason why
the two species can't live together in your pond too!

They live well together.  However, they can spawn together and produce some
ugly dark gray fish that grow like mad and never turn gold or any other
color.

From my experience, avoid goldfish with long, fancy tails. my kois chase
them and bite off their tails. My other gold fish with short tails live
on fine with the kois though.

Goldfish can kill koi, the little sex fiends. Ran a butterfly to death in
my pond. They all went to the LFS afterwards. ~ jan

On the other hand, my 3 koi have never bothered my 3 fantails. These  3
fantails and 3 koi are the same age... 5 years old.  I think it's another
case of...  It all depends.

Koi and Gold fish in same pond?

We had goldfish and koi in the same pond, but be warned - goldfish will
multiply like rabbits when put out into a pond.  We have also been told
that goldfish are more hardy than koi so you typically won't see the
diseases that koi get occur in the goldfish.  Goldfish are said to be
"dirtier" than koi and you need to make sure your filtration system can
handle it.

Several years ago we started out with 20 feeder fish (the 10 for a
dollar kind) just to see what the pond stuff was all about.  The sick
ones died off within a month, but by the next Summer we had 40 fish!  We
thought, "cool we're doing something right" so we advanced on to the
$4.99 4 inch koi.  We had two and they quickly grew to 12 inches (over a
year or two) and we added a few more plus frogs and a catfish. All the
while the goldfish were multiplying but then the population leveled off
at about 70 (guess).  Keep in mind the pond was 4500 gallons.  I think
there was a point where the larger fish started feeding on the goldfish
babies.

Our ecosystem stabilized for about 2 years then we started having
problems.  I think the poorly designed undergravel filtration system had
reached it's capacity.  That's why I say make sure your filtration
system can handle it.  We lost several of the koi (I think 4 or 5), but
everyone else made it fine.  We've since sold the house and plan to
build a pond again at our new place, but we've learned from our
mistakes.  Filtration is the most important thing!
