KOI JUMPED TO DEATH

Post by PThebes1 » Tue, 06 Aug 2002 09:25:56

I have a 250 gallon pond with waterfall.  Temp in Conn has been in the 90's all
week.  I had two healthy 10 inch koi and one 6 inch sarasa.  Been fine for two
years.  Today, one of the KOI jumped out and died.  Found it baked to a crisp.
Any ideas on why it may have decided to jump out?

Check all the basic water qualities (nitrites, nitrates, alkalinity,
ammonia).  I've heard that fish jumping is usually due to toxicity in the
water.  High temperatures can affect the chemical balance of your pond.

It could very well be that the fish have out grown the small
pond.  A koi pond
should start at 1000 gallons and then add 100 gallons per
fish (new guidelines).
The sarasa needs only 20 gallons per fish. If you can't have
a larger pond you
should stay with the comets, sarasa or shubunkin if you like
the tri-colors.

The water got so hot the koi committed suicide?

Changes in water chemistry can cause Koi to jump.  A water change can cause
this.
External Parasites can also cause Koi to jump.
