Pond testing results

Post by RTaylor7 » Fri, 23 May 1997 04:00:00

I finally have purchased and used a pond test kit. I have 2 ponds--one
consisting of 2 whiskey barrels with liners (one empties into other for
water-fall effect). I have lots of plants in each barrel and it has been
set up for 1-1/2 months. I also have lost 3 fish. I moved the 4th into the
yard pond and it is doing fine.  The barrel ponds are filled with county
water with 2- 3 ppm chlorine but no ammonia. The barrel pond has 2-3ppm
ammonia however and 2ppm nitrites. The ph is 7.0....
My yard pond is filled with well water with ph of 7.4ppm. The nitrites are
also 2.ppm. , ammonia 4-5 and a 90ppm hardness. This pond is approx.
150gal, has a small waterfall, many plants and 3goldfish and 1 Koi. The
fish seem fine, look good and good appetite.
Can you suggest what I should do to improve balance in these ponds.
I appreciate this group so much and have been lurking for about 2 months.
Thanks in advance,
Rita

Hi there, You may not have enough surface area for the nitrifying bacteria
to cling to.  You can try adding an inch of peagravel to the barrels
bottoms for them (the bacteria).  Your ammonia is a bit high!     Carol
