pond liners.. missed the debate

Post by Mark Pepel » Thu, 03 Apr 1997 04:00:00

My wife and I are planning a (big) pond for next spring. I missed the
discussion on the pond liners. I would like to do some research and would like
to know of any references or articles that discuss the possible hazards of
usinga roofing liner. The difference in cost would be significant.

I would also like to hear from people that have used the roofing liner and
find how successful they have been.

TIA

I have never seen anything to make me doubt the safety of "roof grade"
material. Also check out the FAQ at the url below

Mark:
In regard to roofing liners, I have asked (repeatedly) on this group
for anyone who has ever had a plant or a fish that they were sure was
harmed by roofing liner.  No one has ever come up with a single instance of
harm. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It just means that apparently no
one here has ever seen it. Were I to build another pond, I would try the
roofing liner.

Just bought liner from a roofing wholesaler. I paid $.41 sq ft. and got a 20' X 30' liner for
$263.00 with tax. The first liner I bought was 20' X 13' and cost over $300.00 from a local
nursery store.

Feels the same, looks the same and I quess I'll fine out if it works the same.

Hi-
Don't know anything about roofing liner, but can tell you
what NOT to use.  Last year I bought some industrial gradel
PVC liner material from a factory here in Houston (grey
in color).  Just to "test the water" so to speak, I put in a
few mosquito fish.  They were dead within 6 hours!  Then
I tried a couple feeder goldfish.  Dead within 8 hours.
But is there "pond grade" PVC???  I finally got polyurethane.
Very stiff but it works.
Cheers,
Bob (Houston)

Bob, your fish deaths were due to uncycled water, not the liner...
unless you did not rinse off the talc first.  The water needs time for a
bacterial colony to develop before adding fish.  I used roofing grade
liner, and while I lost a couple of fish early on, I discovered it was
due to my lack of patience in adding the fish.  Now, a year later, my
pond and fish are all healthy and mating like mad.  The dozen survivers
from last year multiplied to at least 50, and they are laying eggs all
over the pond.  Lots of plants will really help the process along.

But, yes, there is pond grade liner.  It can be had from any pond supply
place... many are here on the net.  Most recommend a 45 ml thickness.
Fish grade is usually guaranteed for the replacement of the liner, but
not for the replacement of the fish, plants and labor.  But hey!  That's
no small potatoes, eh?

First liner I bought was from a Nursery. It cost over $330.00 for a 20' X 13' piece. This past
week a bought the same kind of .045 mil edpm liner from a roofing wholesaler at $.41 sq ft.
Purchased a piece 20' X 30' for $263.00 with tax. Filled it on Sunday, March 30. Added
submergible plants and two feeder goldfish over the weekend. Don't expect any problems. Just
trying out the $.06 variety feeder fish before I add more (much more) expensive Koi. Still plan
to wait two more weeks before I start the waterfall and pump from my first pond. By then the
water should have cycled.

Probably add additional plants next weekend and get the waterfall stream ready to go.

Yeah... I think many new pond owners... I was one :-( .... don't
understand about letting the water cycle.  Even if it isn't chlorinated
or chloraminated it still has to develop a bacterial colony to be able
to cope with the fish wastes.  I used roofing liner in my pond last
summer... I did lose 4 feeders, but it was because I added too many too
soon, not because of the liner.  Once I waited a proper time and kept an
eye on the water quality until it stablized I was able to add more fish.
The original stocking rate was 12 fish (fantails and comets) for 850
gallons.  They immediately set up housekeeping and this year I have
fifty or so... and need a new pond since they are laying eggs like no
body's business!
