evening visitor question

this evening I saw a hawk moth (or a hummingbird moth) fly-dipping my
pond then it disapeared near the rocks when I went over to see if it had
accidntaly got stuck in the pond andyow it flew off then,

do they lay eggs in water or any idea what it was doing??
