Food Koi Like

Post by TOBY R BOUDE » Mon, 26 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I have a fairly large pond with about 200 fish. I was looking for an
economical alternative to commericial pond fish food and noticed the
similarity to cat food. For the last few weeks I've been alternating daily
between the two. So far I've seen no harmful effects. The fish were
somewhat reluctant at first but as the food absorbed water and softened
they gobbled it up, now they don't even wait. Has anyone had any experience
with this or any other cheaper food?

Be real careful talking about dog/cat food here. People don't
flame in this group; however, some Koi owners are too proud
to feed their prize winner Puppy Chow.

Check yellow page under farm feed. A company called Purina
was recommanded on this group at price closer to dog/cat
food that is designed to feed fish.

Do add some vegitable, wheat etc to the fish/shrimp diet.
Not only safe money, give them some other source and keep
them from eating your plant, too.

.. cat food is extremely high in protein which is not considered good for
fish like Koi and GF... as Paul recommended, find 50 lb bags of Koi food
for much less money or even trout food, but supplement with romaine lettuce
or other greens.. Ingrid
