Cats & mice

Post by Scraggi » Sun, 25 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Okay, I have a question: my fianc and I are going to get a cat once we're
married, but there's a catch--she's my cat from home and she will definitely
go after our mice, and they're our babies. Any way to keep them extra-safe?
What do those of you with cats do? Should we just nix the kitty altogether?

Thanks,
Scraggie

our mice live in the computer room which we both spend a bit of time in - me
on the net and hubby playing games (boys!).  This room is off limits to our
cats so they don't really get to see them as much as they wish they could!
The other althernative is if you have a really high shelf the cat can't get
at - although that's hard cos if a cats really determined 'where there's a
will there's a way'!
Good luck - it can be done.

My family has two cats and a dog.  They always want to get at my mouse or my
bird.  I keep them both on a high shelf in my computer room (the cats aren't
allowed in)  If you can remember to shut doors, than get the cat!

P.S. Good luck and Congradulations

Hi

I have among other pets a cat and two mice and never realised how determined
she could be.
The mice are kept in the same room that my cat spends most of her time in,
and as she see's them as more then a toy she has managed to throw the cage
onto the floor a couple of times leaving the mice very lucky to survive.
Luckily I managed to save them before the cat got them.
Since then I decided something had to be done. I wasn't going to give up my
cat and I didn't want to return the mice so this is what I did.
Firstly both cages are within reach of the cat so they had to be secure.
So both cages are now tied down with string to the nearest heavy item, two
pieces of string per cage one on each side. this has been a great success
also I put a tray underneath them or a small strip of cardboard selotaped
onto the front of the cage so that my cat cat can't catch their tails.

Since doing all this she now only disturbs them in the mornings mostly,
never throws the cage on the floor, but does frighten the mice a little.

One last thing to watch for is mice that escape, mine did once and were
lucky not to get spotted by the cat. so just keep them secure and you
shouldn't have any problems or just keep the cat out the room if possible.

hope this helps

Scraggie :

Use aquariums with a wire mesh lid that's secured with special clips (sold
separately for about $4.  Kitty can't get in and mousies can't get out!  Just
don't overcrowd the cage!!

That's exactly what we have! Great! Our clips are "c" shaped, with a little
hook that you put under the lip of the aquarium. We're afraid, though, that
Kitty could pop that out with a paw. I don't think she's that dedicated....
I think keeping them in a "no-cat" room is an excellent idea as well....

Thanks, everyone! :)

I too have those clips.  My cat isn't aware that they are "poppable" and if
he should discover that, I doubt even then he'll get it open 'cause he parks
his hiney on *top* on the mesh screen and then paws the sides to reach the
goodies inside.  He generally gets frustrated after a few minutes and goes
to torment the dog.

You know the best solution would be to put your mice in one room and not
allow the cat to go in there.  I would not risk my cat being alone with a
little mouse.  It just seems sensable to close the door and put the cat
outside or keep it in another room.  I guess I am just a logical person.

I've owned cats for 26 years.  They're inside cats and have the run of
the house.  It is impossible to guarantee a cat will not get into an
off-limits room.  We've also own many, many rodents - and birds too.
To guarantee that our cats cannot get to our other pets we take
precautions - birds and rodents are on stands that are high and only large
enough for the cage or aquariums.  Tops are secured on aquariums with
clips.  Obstructions are placed on top of aquariums to discourage kitty from
reclining there, like a box of tissues or a few small toys.
We have not had a problem.
I did lose several budgies many, many years ago because I allowed a cat
to hang out on top of the huge, floor standing, fancy cage and when I got
home from work one day, the cage had been tipped over, doors opened, and
birds loose.  I lost six birds that day.  So I make sure this won't ever
ever happen again.
