Millie hamster has a pimple....

Post by Thumpe » Thu, 21 Jul 2011 22:00:41

I have noticed a small reddish pimple close to the mouth of a female hamster
I'm looking after. Does anyone know what this could be?

Thanks

Ian

Hi there,

How are her teeth? You can get an overgrowth or broken tooth, and it is
possible in extreme cases to get a tooth poking through the skin or causing
imflamation from the inside. You can usually get them to bite on a hard
treat (those tiny bone shaped dog biscuits perhaps), while*** on to the
other end, and then see if both sets of teeth are even and in contact with
the treat.

If they are heavy cage bar chewers they can get a little sore where the bars
rub. They don't usually get spots as such, but would be the result of an
injury or scratch. If you are at all concerned really the best thing is to
get a vet to have a look.

I hope its nothing serious.

:o)

Her teeth look alright to me. I gave her a bit of jacobs cracker, and she
had no problems biting on it.

Yes she does chew the bars quite a lot. I think I need to get her something
alternative to chew on.

I think I'll wait a few days as, apart from the spot, she is acting quite
normally. Today she completely stripped one of those corn on the cobs.

It's been a long time since I had a hamster of my own. Went to pet shop
looking for those chew sticks but they don't have them anymore. Instead I
got her a kind of mineral rock thing for her to gnaw on. She had a go on it
straightaway.

I've been hamsterless for about 4 years now.  I do so miss having one around
the house, I'm part nocturnal myself so it was like having a weany dog (but
in a ball) following me around doing the housework. I'm trying to be
sensible as I'm not in the best of health and we have 2 cats and 2 dogs as
well, and it's more for him to look aftter when I'm unwell. So very jealous
that you've got one to look after lol!!

This is my niece's hamster that I'm looking after. Her family have had to
move out of their rented flat at short notice. I've got a few fish and a
gecko as well as a hamster. They also had a ginger tom cat that has gone to
one of her friends families, and they had 2 staffies that have gone to
rehoming centres.

When I was younger I had gerbils. They are crazy rodents. Both gerbils and
hamster are great escapologists :-)

Oh definitely good at getting themselves out of things. 2 of the best bits
of advice I ever give to other hamster owners is using a couple of strips of
masking tape (doesn't mark the plastic) to secure the door of a playball.

The other one is learn how to build a hamster trap!  Thats a waste paper bin
or straight sided pot, with books stacked up the outside to make steps. Soft
tissue (for landing on) a piece of apple or a tiny bit of peanut butter,
which you drag across the floor up the "steps" rub on the side of the bin
and drop in, with a little bit of food. You shut it in the suspected room
overnight and 99 times out of 100  you have a cross hamster in the bin in
the morning.lol!

Oh that is brilliant. A hamster I had one time used to live for days behind
the wall units. I think he had built a little home in there with a food
supply. I used to leave it's cage open near where he would come out. I often
found him back in his cage in the morning, but there were also times where
he had been back to his cage just to collect food for his wall unit stash.
