It should never be sold for small pets, but that's a whole other
story.
Good luck, DGI

->my hamster stinks really bad. Ho can we improve the smell of her and her
->cage?
Hamsters don't really smell, but there may be two things going on
here. First, urine build-up can be a problem. Make sure the cage is cleaned
very thoroughly every seven days. If your hamster is the sort that urinates
a lot, scoop out the soiled urine (in the "pee spot") and replace it
frequently. Also, make sure that the residue is cleaned away, because that
will become crusty and build up, making the problem worse.
There is also another problem with female Syrian Goldens (assuming
that's what she is) every 3 ~ 5 days they go into heat. During this time
they secrete a small amount of a quite foul-smelling substance in the
*** area. This lessens throughout life, but for now, the only thing you
can really do is physically wipe your hamster back there with a tissue. She
won't mind, and the cleaner you keep her back there, the cleaner she'll
smell in general. Don't be frightened if you can actually see this
substance in some quantity. It is whitish and thick (and as I say, smells
VERY bad) but it is perfectly normal. Just wipe it away and remind your
hamster that you love her regardless of how she smells (true, right?).
Good luck, DGI

It took my hamster 3 tries to get used to it, but now he LOVES the
dust bath.
Also follow the advice above regarding cleaning the cage - and
remember, NO cedar chips!

Besides regular cleaning I would recommend that you put some Mint
leaves in her cage. I put some of that in (one) of her sleeping
quarters. She (=my hamster Jamy) doesn't mind it. And it smells alot
better than a hamster in heat.
For the toilet area you can use the same, but I use very fine cat
litter, which I refresh every 3 to 4 days.
If you enter the room I keep Jamy in, you'll hardly smell it that a
hamster is present.
Hope it helps,
Mathijs

I had bought Hamster litter. A bit expensive though: approx. 2 dollars
for half a kilo of hamster litter. The pet store advised me a cat
litter that is exactly the same, but cheaper. (6 dollars for 6 kilo).
(I) Don't use ordinary cat litter, as for the reasons you stated.
