i was wondering if there are any conversion devices you need to buy to
convert from one brand of  equipment to another (critter trail to S.A.M. to
habitrail)? do they all fit together interchangably?

Not that I'm aware of...frequently, I've seen statements on the packaging whose
gist is, "...will work with other brands of small-animal habitatis."

Like Dieter, I've seen the "compatible with..." but we have a SAM
slide/ladder and although the connector on it is the same diameter as our
Rotastak tubing I couldn't see them going together without some form of
adhesive. I've seen the Habitrail tubing but not in the same shop that sells
the other brands. I'm in the UK so you may have more where you are. I have
looked but have not seen any commercial adapters.

Those three brands do.  Hartz is larger, although I believe they make an
adapter.

Thats interesting, the three brands you mention are available here, so if I
make an adapter from our Rotastak to any of the others, they might all be
connectable
