Craggy old hams, Baldness and cages

As she's got older my female syrian sleeps a lot and she gets very
grumpy.  Her name is Joy, but she certainly doesn't live up to her
name.  I always ensure that I give them each a cuddle at least once a
day, but everytime I pick her out of her cage she gives out these loud
chuckling noizes as if she's angry. Sometimes I only have to walk to
her cage and say her name, and she gives me a scowl and runs to her
bed covering herself with the bedding.  When I do have her out I've
noticed that she has a bald patch surrounding her tail.  The only
reason why I think it's appeared is due to fact she sleeps a lot and
her fur is getting finer as she's got older.  But I do hope it's
nothing serious.

Also, yesterday one of my kids came back from the town center with a
new hamster. They said that they saw this hamster cage in a shop and
just thought he buy it plus another hamster from the pet shop.  The
problem is that this cage very small.  I said that he can keep it in
this cage for a few weeks whilst it's still growing but when it gets
bigger it will need a bigger cage because hamsters kept in small cages
tend to be bad tempered.  I've got a few words to say to the guys in
this pet shop for allowing kids to buy pets without ***
supervision.
