How old is your hammy?  An older hamster will start to lose hair from the
tail forward.  I'm told that yeast tablets help.  Otherwise, if it's
around the ears, or other parts of the body, the hamster could have mange
(but you could also see small bumps or pimples in the area as well) which
can be treated by a vet, or the hamster could be allergic to his bedding.
I'm sure others out here can be of some help.  Good luck!

It's usually a sign of old age.  If your hammy is younger than about
1 1/2 years, then take him (her?) to the vet.
Cheers, Chris.

My hamsters were both developing bald patches.  We went to the vet who
examined them and did skin cultures (or something like that) and found
nothing wrong.  Mac and Tosh were both about 10 months old at the time.
They are both golden hamsters.  Everywhere there was a bald patch, either
short dark black hair or long gray "teddy bear hair" grew in.  Since then,
Tosh has kept getting lighter and lighter until he is almost gray all over.
I've never heard of or seen this before.  I think I have a couple of
mutants or something! But maybe different hair will grow in on your hammy
too.

Seeing the vet is a good idea, though, especially if your hammy scratches
or picks at the bald spots or if the skin looks unusual.
