Hi dear hamster friends,

I need your expert advice on this one. I today noticed that Lieveke, our
acrobat hammie, is currently getting rather long finger nails. For sure
the nails at its pinks are very long. I am afraid that ishe might hurt
herself grooming. Is it possible to trim the nails yourself (any hints)?
Or is a visit to the vet more appropriate? I'm a little bit afraid that
Lieveke is far too dynamic to hold still on the one hand but on the
other hand I do not prefer to have to put her to sleep to do the nail
t***.

Looking forward to the very best of advice!

Regards,

Frits

Hi Frits,
My dwarf Judo's nails grow really fast.  In fact, I have to trim them
tonight :)
I find that if I get a firm grip on her, she struggles for a few seconds
then calms down enough so that I can trim one paw at a time.  I make
sure to give her treats and kisses in between paws though, so she knows
that she's not being hurt.
I think a vet in my area would way overcharge for t*** ham nails,
and would probably do a worse job than me since Judo trusts me.
But if you're not comfortable with that, maybe a visit to the vet is in
order.

:)

Kristin

Perhaps you can get her to do it herself... Since I gave Jane The H. a new
sandbath, I noticed her nails are very much shorter. The sandbath is a
plastic trough with a slightly rippled bottom. I guess when she digs down
to the bottom of that, it applies just the right amount of abrasion to file
the nails somewhat. It certainly wasn't planned, but a very nice bonus, and
seems a little less drastic than putting sandpaper in the wheel for a
short period, as I have seen some people suggest. :)

I just brought my hamster in to the vet's to have her nails clipped and
they charged me $11. Seemed worth to me because I didn't want to run the
risk of clipping one too close. They just took her in the back for five
minutes and then brought her back out to me.

Hi Frits,

You could use small human nail scissors and just snip off the very tip of
the nail.  If you do not feel confident enough to do it on your own, maybe
you could ask a friend to hold Lieveke for you whilst you snip away.  This
way, would be less stressful for all concerned.  ;)

You could go to a Vet if you prefer and it is advisable to do so if you
really are unsure about the procedure.  Maybe this time you could have your
Vet cut the nails and show you the best way to do so, so next time, you will
be able to do it yourself.

I would of made them clip the nails in front of me!  ;)

You are right of course, you can cut to much nail and also, just as one is
cutting the Hamsters nail he may pull away and you can end up pulling out
the nail.  ouch!!!
