Just Got Hamster 4 Days Ago

Post by Billy Klin » Thu, 02 Nov 2000 07:04:47

Hello!
My name is Billy, and I'm new here. I just got my hamster (nicknamed
Speedie, since my dad had to lure it into a corner to catch it from inside
the pet shop display, it was that fast and energetic) Saturday. It has one
problem, though. The cage came with a plastic nest house in the shape of a
little house. It looks cute, but has brought the hamster into doing a
pecuilar habit. Since it's on the second floor of the cage, Speedie has
picked it as his bathroom. We aren't mad or anything(it's actually easier to
clean the house than it is the cage, since the house is screwed on with a
plastic***on the outside of the cage), but my mom and I were wondering
why it choose the house, especially since it sleeps there?
Thank you in advance for any help at all.

All hamsters pooh ie solid, where they sleep because they tend to eat it
again to extract any remaining goodness from it. They pee ie wet, well away
from where they sleep, usually in one corner.

Cheers

Congradulations. Hammys are great.  My hammy changes her potty spot every now
and then.  But maybe your hammy doesn't want to sleep in the plastic house. I
understand plastic houses may not allow enough air to circulate and can even be
sort of unhealthy for hammys.  I'd just get her another house and let her use
the plastic one for a potty.  I now use an empty kleenex box and replace it
with a clean one every couple of weeks.
