Any risk to feeding hamsters cornflakes?

Post by +c0re » Fri, 09 Apr 2004 02:21:03

I notice that my hamster's food (from the pet store) is made up from
different things, there looks to be what look like cornflakes, crushed pea
flakes, molasses (I think) and seeds of various kinds. I notice that my
hamster always eats the "cornflakes" first, and seems to like them way more
than the rest of the food. I gave him a few cornflakes the other day
(regular unsweetened ones) and he seemed to love them.. is there any danger
in feeding him these in with his normal food too on a more regular basis?
I don't know what stuff is in them, vitamins and iron I think, is any of
this harmful to hamsters? (I'd guess no but you never know)

thanks for any help! :)

Hiya,

I'm not too sure, ingredient wise too many would be bad as, believe it or
not, the regular ones contain a considerable amount of sugar.  Overall,
though I have fed my hamster cornflakes in the past, I haven't done so since
one of my friends told me about watching his pet mouse die after having part
of a cornflake stick in its throat and watching it ***to death.  Not fun.

I heard a LONG time ago that ANYONE would be better off eating the BOX
rather than the contents. Maybe Oat Meal would be better than puzzle pieces
:) I mean Corn Flakes.

There are many good cereals that you can feed to your hamsters.  Cornflakes
are actually not that good since it doesn't have that many whole grains.
Good cereal brands are Multigrain Cheerios and Total.  Some people even make
their own mixes out of these cereals because they contain lots of vitamins
and minerals.

I'm not a vet so I don't know if it is healthy or not or whether these
cereals can meet the daily requirements of hamsters however, some people
believe that human grade food is better for their pets.  As well, they do
claim that their pets do much better with custom made food.
