New Pet piggy...Sick?

Post by Michele Crai » Sat, 20 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Hi all.  I hope someone here can help me
out.  We got a new Guinea pig a week ago.
He's very sweet and loves to cuddle.  Last
night he was snuggled up under my chin and I
felt something on his lower back.  I tried to
see what it is, but his hair is long and it's
hard to see his skin through it.  It feels
like hard, scabby skin, kind of lumpy and
only in one raised patch about the size of a
nickel.

Any ideas what this could be?  Please let me
know if it's something that needs treated
right away.  The boys would be devastated if
something happens to this little guy.

TIA!

The problem is, I can't gather from what you've written where on the
animal or what kind of thing this could be.  It follows that you
should take the animal to someone who can look at it, and would be
best prepared to say what it is.  Go to a vet.  In my experience, GP's
aren't that hearty, and an open wound sort of thing could add stress
that could quickly lead to a serious, and tragically quick illness.

Hi Michele
<micheles post is at the bottom>
I'm not totally sure what might be wrong with your pig so I hope some more
people reply to your question.

I have a boy guinea pig and I notice that every once in a while he has a gooey,
oily,  yuck spot on his rear, kind of  near his tailbone. I've been reading at
the guinea pig digest that this is a scent gland. his doesn't smell but it is
kind of gross. I sometimes give him a bath when he gets like this, sometimes I
just leave it alone and it goes away in a few days. some people at the digest
say to use a cotton ball with some mineral oil on it to clean the fur. but I
haven't tried to clean Fluffy George that way.

I hope it's just the scent gland and not something  more serious.
