Ahhhh... spring!

Post by Evelyn Bake » Mon, 03 May 1999 04:00:00

This weekend I gave my piggies their first "grassy knoll" of the season.
They were in seventh heaven. It was like a guinea pig choir. They each
trilled alternatively as they ate.

Gotta love spring... :) Today, I went out with a bucket and picked
treats for the babies... too cold to let them out in their pen, and I
promised them I would (it was warmer this morning, but now it's too
cold). This is a good substitute! Shoulda heard them start up as soon as
they smelled the fresh grasses and dandelion leaves!
I've got more GP food seeds started than I do flowers or human food
this year... a whole flat of piggy treats (lettuce, radishes, carrots,
turnip greens (Seven Top... only grows the leaves), swiss chard, and the
all time favorites: beets and PARSLEY!) and absolutely NO human only
seeds or flowers! I even have some carefully saved dandelion seeds
started, so that the dandelion season is extended.... now that's getting
a bit pathetic....

figured I should post a HAPPY message!

Shoot, my lawn produces more dandelions than our 2 piggies can eat, without
even half trying!  :o)

Squeaky & I are staying with my mom until I get a job & apartment, etc.
after my divorce...  I got caught outside yesterday with a bucket &
scissors, cutting grass & dandelions for you-know-who, but Mom's apartment
is strictly no pets, except for her cat.....so I had to say it was for the
cat.... :)

So Mom's neighbours really DO think I'm nuts...

I get away with it because my neighbors already know I'm nuts! If I'm
not walking around picking grass and putting it in a bucket, I'm on my
hands and knees taking pictures of tiny plastic horses, or I'm guarding
a big square section of lawn with a bunch of guinea pigs in it, or I'm
feeding sunflower seeds to the ground squirrels... or building strange
objects with no apparent use with hardware cloth (actually cages...)

Or training my dog to lounge (like a horse... where you have them on a
long rope and get them to run/trot/walk whatever in a circle around
you), or training him for agility (and that looks weird too!)

Then there's walking the cats on leashes, walking the piggies on
leashes....

In short, don't worry about looking weird. Either they'll just chortle
in private, or they'll come over and ask just what on earth you are
doing and you can explain. Want some dandelion seeds? They would all be
G4's (meaning they are from fourth generation garden grown dandelions)
and are carefully selected for a slow bolt time and more leaves than
flowers. :) Okay, Okay, so maybe I am a little crazy...

How about this ..... I went walking with my daughter and our dog tonight.
We came past these huge dandelions in the field and I said: "Look at those!
Don't they look tasty?" and my daughter replied "Yum!"  I do hope no-one
heard that!

The piggies did go absolutely wild when they got the dandelion leaves.

treated with moss killer a week ago.  I give them dandelion leaves and the
wild grass from the flower beds which was NOT treated but they enjoy
munching on the lawn.            Linda, Rick

You guys think your nuts?  I travelled 3l00 kms. across the country with six
guinea pigs and a dog in my vehicle.  No problem at the borders with the
dog...but the border patrol thought we were out of our heads travelling with
all the Rodentia. =)
