It's called Polydactalyism and it is a genetic***up somewhere in the
lineage, This is not harmful nor will it impead any movement, The only thing
is one day it might get caught in something and tear off or if it had bone
it could be broken but on average these are usually all flesh, with no bones
and little if no nerves run into this toe. Cats and dogs have this too very
commomly. If you would breed this pig it would pass this on generation to
generation, They are not registerable or showable.

I have this with one of my pigs. You need to be careful about keeping the
toenails on this toe clipped. They will usually grow just as well as the
other toenails, but as they do not support weight they will not get worn
down and will need clipping.

Over here, In the UK, a lot of breeders remove the extra toe when the cavy
is young.

Just thought I'd mention it, but I don't know if it helps  :O)

John.

Hi

Ginger had extra toes on both his back legs when I first got him. Ginger was
7 weeks old when I got him and I was also worried about this as they were
*** quite loosely. I took him to the vets and they clipped them both off
as I was so worried that he would get them caught on something. He was in no
pain and was fine about having them both removed but then he was only 7
weeks old.

You do whatever you feel is right and comfortable for your guinea pig. If
you feel that the guinea pig and you can cope with this problem then leave
well alone but if you feel that you are not able to cope then see your vet
for advice.
