My Other Pig had her Litter....

Post by Martha Jacob » Mon, 13 Nov 2000 04:00:00

Only a couple day ago I posted  a story of my little pig having her litter
of 2 last  sunday, Her sister also pregnant (long story how they both got
pregnant at the same time) was due around last Tuesday. She held off till
Thursday. I was so sad to come down and see three beautiful, big, healthy
babies, but mom seem to be lying oddly in the cage. She was alive but laying
on her side slighlt on her back. I didn't want to mess too much so I sat
down and watched her. The movement startled her enough to get up and run, or
at least try. She got up but could only drag her back legs for a few inches
then fell. Exhausted. I was horrified. She had dislocated both hips in
giving birth. Probably because she is so young to be having 3 babies or even
any babies right now.  I took her and the babies on an emergency call. The
vet says right now  there is streaching in the muscles and tendons from
birth so even if he could put them back in the sockets, they would fall out
again. So he gave me some stuff to give her that will take away a little
discomfort but she has to wait a week before gettin them put back in. She
does her best to get up for her babies but the effort is so much she can
only do this for a short while. I have traded her biggest baby off to her
sister to raise and they are doing great. Her babies and she have accepted
him fully.  Her other 2 daughters take turns nursing off the exposed ***
on what ever side shes on. I have been supplmentaly feeding them 4 times a
day and are they literally little piggies! Has anyone ever have this happen
to there's. In the many years of having breeding pigs I have never had one
dislocate there hips.
