Weight diference between males and females?

Post by Raksh » Thu, 25 Jun 1998 04:00:00

I bought both my ferrets at the same time, one male and one female..
when i bought them ( they were app. 10 weeks old), the male weight
around 500gm. and the female was at 400gm. ... one week later, the
male ballooned upto 650gm and the female was at 450gm. This week, the
male has gone upto 750gm and the female is at 490gm. Is this sort of
difference in weight gained by the 2 sexes common? Is my male (
Frisky) hogging all the food for himself? Should I buy Pepe ( my
female ferret) a Tazer to use on Frisky?

Also, I notice Frisky LOVES any type of treat ( including my
fingers!), however Pepe seems to only like Ferretone apart from the
regular food. Wonder if the weight difference is due to this? I know
that I do not feed Frisky that many treats!! ( I think :) )

Hi,

Females generally run smaller than males do.  There is nothing wrong with
this.  This is not saying all females run smaller but for the most part
they do.

I have a famale that would just about eat any snack and the other 3 are a
bit more picky.  Dink doesnt' take much to snacks at all and will
occasionally take one just to make mom happy.

The average weight for spayed female ferrets is approx. 1 to 2 possibly 3 lbs.
and for neutered males 2-4 lbs.  There is a big difference in body size, my
females range from about 1.25 to 1.75lbs and my males are- Nosferretu 2.5 lbs,
Perseus 4 lbs., and D'Artagnan at 14wks old is almost 2.5 lbs.

As has been said, most males gain double what the females do.  And when
they are kits, they put on alot of weight fairly quickly.  I just about
fell off the chair when my vet informed me that the kit he'd weighed in at
1.8 pounds at 16 weeks weighed 2.2 pounds two weeks later.  I guess it was
all that good food. <grin>
