My Ferret is acting Strange - HELP.

Post by dfus » Sat, 03 Feb 2001 11:58:14

Hi,

I have a beautiful little boy -Caesar-, almost 8 months old.  He's
always been healthy, playful and ***.

The last a few days he's been acting strange.  He doesn't come out to
play, he keeps hiding under dark places, he used to sleep with me on bed
under the sheets to be warm, he doesn't like that any more, I keep
petting him and put him on bed, but he'd run away, he eats ok and other
things are normal.  He seems to be scared and littlest noise would scare
him and get him be fluffed and his body starts shaking.  He shakes a
lot, he didn't do that when he was cold but he does it almost all the
time.  The Vet said he's all right???   I don't know what's going on
with him, I miss him a lot, he'd rather stay hidden all the time.
Please help me, did anyone experience something like that?  By the way,
he's Siamese and quite large in size, he's not fat, it's his natural
size, he weighs about 3 Pounds, but I think he lost some weight.

I would appreciate ideas and thoughts about this.

Thank you.

Muna Sheeba and Caesar

I just adopted a ferret that acts much the same.  It is my intuition that
someone had abused him.  Now i am NOT saying that you abused the ferret, but if
u have kids, they may have gotten a bit rought with him or something?  My
ferret has a problem with trusting people.   I have only had ferrets for about
a year, and this is hte only thing i can think of.  I am sure some of the
people in here could probably give you a better answer than this, but u asked
for ideas and this is mine.  Best of luck.

If ferrets weren't so damn cute, youd have to kill em!

If he is not sick, which he is definitly acting like he is (maybe as simple
as a cold), he might have developed some kind of paranoia. My Tristan was
kind of like this for the first  1 & 1/2 of his life. When he got really
sick, I spent so much time handling him it seemed to break him of it. Just
handle him more than often, stroke him, etc. Don't allow him become more
estranged. How does he get along with the others.

Dear Sandra,

Thanks a lot for your thoughts. I appreciate replies regarding this.  I don't think
that's the case, I don't have any children and my ferrets are my babies, I have 2
of them.  and they get along perfect.  Caesar lives like a king at our house,
nobody touches them but me and my husband and we normally take them out with us for
fun or a walk, or when the maid comes to clean.  So, he's not really in touch with
anyone else to abuse him.  As for us, we just love them more than anything in this
world, I don't see that's the case.  I do appreciate your thoughts, thank you so
much.  If you have any other thoughts please let me know.

Thanks again for taking the time to write to me.

Best Wishes,
Muna, Caesar and Sheeba

Thanks a lot for your thoughts. I appreciate your time.  I don't know why he's
paranoid.  He's always been happy, plays with us, we've had him for about 6
months now and he was very playful, ***, gets into everything, suddenly the
last a few days, he's a different person, or ferret.  Why would something like
this happen to him, I am sure there's no abuse because we handle him with love
and care every minute, they're the only thing I have to care about.  He gets a
long with Sheeba, my other ferret, real well, but lately he doesn't seem to
play with her, in fact he tries to keep her away from him when she wants to
play, it breaks my heart to see them like that.  I try to calm him down, try to
play with him but all he does is ignore me and go to hide.  Sometime, when we
used to go out and he's home, as soon as he hears the door he comes running to
me wanting to be hugged and picked up.  Now, he runs to hide!  It's worrying me
a lot.

I do appreciate your thoughts, thank you so much.  If you have any other
thoughts please let me know.

Best Wishes,
Muna, Caesar and Sheeba

Has anything changed in the house?  New carpet?
Have you had a thunder storm recently?
Any workmen over recently?
My WWW went through a phase where she went balistic when I made a kissy noise
near her ear, so I stopped doing it for several weeks and now I can do it again
with no problem; go figure!  Maybe it was even a bad dream, your little Ceasar
had.  Just keep loving him and I bet he'll be OK.

Hi peter,

Thanks a lot for your email, and I'll try to answer all your questions.  He's
had his shots and he's meutered.  Now, I have a question, why would this be a
problem? and How?  Just for knowledge.  Thanks again for taking the time to
write to my concerns, it's very much appreciated.

Again, Thank you for your concerns and thoughts, here's my answers to your
questions:

he's been like that for a few days, like 2-3 days.

He certainly shakes when I wake him up, but he sometimes shake when he's
awake, well, so many times.

The food he's eating is no problem, I feed him Totally ferret and it's good,
I have another ferret and she's not doing the same.  I have checked the bag
before I got it, and it's good.

I don't think I rolled over on him, because he has his own special spot on
the bed, as well as Sheeba, Sheeba even sleeps closer than him but I never
had any problems with her.

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this, I do appreciate it a lot.

PS:  here's a website that has Sheeba and Caesar, I haven't updated it for 6
months, didn't have time, it has Caesar's pictures too.

Thanks again.

HI there,

Thanks a lot for your reply, I do appreciate your time and concern.

"Bad Dream"  could be the thing that happened to him, because everything else
didn't really happen.  Well, I'll do all that would make him be ok again.

Thanks again.

how about installing a hidden camera when your maid is in the house??? I
have heard of nanny cams which caught nannys being bad to kids. Perhaps the
maid is mean to him.

Hi Pam,

Thanks for your thoughts.  I don't leave my ferrets at home when the maid
comes, we usually go out and I take them with me, just in case because I don't
trust nobody with my ferrets.  I've been taking him out and playing with him
today, he seems to feel a little better, I played a little trick and had him
run after Sheeba, and they played for a good time today, which is a progress.
He's been out of his hiding place today playing with my toes begging me to pick
him up, he loves to be picked up and walk around, where he lays down and
watched the ground and others.  I noticed he was loosing some hair today, but I
guess the weather has to do something with it. We're in KC, MO and it's
freezing cold.

Again, Thank you for your thoughts, and I like the idea of having a camera at
home, we'll do that soon.

Regards,

Muna, Caesar and Sheeba

Just a thought -- check him over for any half-healed cuts and scrapes.  I was
reminded of the time when our cat got injured and would not come to anybody and
because we could't pick him up we didn't find the cut for a couple of days.  It
taught me to be really suspicious when an animal won't come to you.  >The last
