You probably want to avoid acrylics, as they can chip and flake off. A
***enamel is probably your best bet -- they even have them with less
noxious chemicals, and some even clean up with plain old water. :-)

If you're doing this in wood, you may want to consider bonding a surface
to it rather than painting it. Formica, for example, is extremely durable,
won't crack or peel, isn't toxic (if they can't eat it, they can't get
poisoned by it), won't stain, and is fairly easy to bond to wood.
