OT: Help on free Internet access

Post by Paul E. Jamiso » Wed, 19 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I don't like imposing on the good will of my
friends here, but I find that I'm in a bit of a
financial bind that's impacting my current ISP.
Unless I can clear up a credit card in about a
week (unlikely), I won't have Usenet access.
I want to check out the free ISP option.  It
would have to be:

1) Windows 3.1 compatible
2) Located in the US.
3) Accesible to Usenet (of course!)
4) I'm willing to put up with the pop-up
ads if they don't crash my system on a
regular basis.

Any help would be appreciated.

I dunno if it works with 3.1 but netzero is a good start.

www.netzero.com

Good luck Paul.  I'd hate to see ya go.

Hi Paul, check out http://members.tripod.com/~freeISPz/index.html .  The
biggest hurdle may be the windows 3.1 compatible part.  Also, I'm not
sure if Windows 3.1 and not crashing your system on a regular basis is
possible either.

I'll check around a bit more and see what I can find.  If they financial
bind is temporary, you might just switch services.  Many are free the
first month.

Imposing?  Not at all (unless you're asking for money--that'd be
imposing! ;o)

Hi Paul--
I've checked most of the national "free" ISPs, and none of them support
Windows 3.1 (even Kmart's!).  There are many free regional ISPs, some of
them may offer 3.1 access, but I don't know what region you're in.
Also, be careful, as it looks like only about half offer usenet access.

Here's some more places to check:
http://freeisps.4mg.com/
http://www.isps.com/
http://www.isps-free.com/newpage2.htm  ("You may try installing using
the Quick Set-Up method, if you wish, however there is no guarantee it
will work [with 3.1]" but they kinda make it sound like it might)
http://internet4free.homepage.com/AccessNumbers.htm

The only other idea I have is to ask Russ how he sets up with his BBS to
get the newsgroup.  His BBS guy might know a BBS in your area you can
access through.

Good luck.  Lemme know if there's anything else I can do.
