New spider keeper!!!

Post by marco.digiuliomari » Sun, 03 Jun 2001 21:07:37

Hi to everybody...I'm new to this newgroup and to the world of spiders.
My name is Marco and I live in the UK.
Few days ago I bought a female mexican red knee spider.
The shopkeeper told me to feed her with three crickets a day, although they
are quite small, I think it's too much.
What do u think???
Does anyone know a good book on spiders or a good web-site???
what size of tank do u need to keep a Goliath???
Thanks for your answers.
 bye

Marco

The more you feed a spider the quicker it dies!

Mine are ***s and there fed much less than that, theres a few websites
that may help you, but tyr the shop below, im just a customer but hes the
ony decent shop in this area.

I would learn to walk before getting a goliath, nice T but not for the
newbie.

BTW my Chilean Rose dropped a egg sack 2 days and its pretty exiting.....

Im no expert, learning myself, plus its hard to find people who agree about
stuff like this, whats right for one person seems to be wrong for someone
else!

I feed my ***s maybe once a week, or 5 days or so, thats what i have been
told.

Like with my snakes etc, i try to replicate there wild instincts etc, they
wouldnt be feeding everyday over and over in the wild would they? Ok i feed
my snakes weekely, but could easily go a 3 weeks or more like in the wild,
so i guess its the same with spiders, if a T stops feeding then its usually
a case of a shed coming up i think, but i have only had one T shed b4.

New spider keeper!!!

I also go with a more natural feeding schedule.  In the wild the spider is
certainly not gonig to be eating every day and on some days he might get lucky
and gorge while going without food for several other days.  I feed once a week
but vary the amounts.  Sometimes I'll dump a bunch of crix in (6-12)...while
other weeks...just one or two.  For tiny spiderlings now they are
different...you do want to keep to a more regular and constant schedule until
they are larger.

I would leave the eggs with her unless you feel she might do something.
I had a C cornautus that laid eggs and after a few days she started
digging in her cage and destroyed them. My other hatchings have gone ok.

Noone can tell you how often to feed an individual T. Just pay attention
to it and try to learn its habits. But trying to say you should feed a T
so many crickets at some regular time is just wrong. Many factors come
into it. Sex, age, species, size of food, temp, molting cycle, etc,
etc....... I have so many to feed that I usually just feed all of my Ts
at once every 2 or 3 weeks. I try to give each T as many crickets or
baby mice as they will take at that time.
