Well, sand and gravel are pretty bad substrates for any tarantula.  Rose
hairs would tolerate it probably because they'll take any abuse, but they'd
be better off with one or some combination of the following:
potting soil
vermiculite
peat moss
sphagnum moss
pet store substrates (such as bed-a-beast or jungle mix or whatever)

Things that aren't appropriate include:
sand
gravel/rocks
carpet
wood chips (especially cedar)

Use 50/50 peat moss and vermiculite. This works good either dry or
moist.

Be excellent to each other!

I have kept mine on a mixture of aspen shavings and birch bark...Seems to
work pretty good.

I keep my Chilean Rose on a bed of vermiculite and wood chips (not cedar).
She has been living on this type of mixture for about a year and a half. No
problems at all.
