Hi,

When and how do you clip toes and wings. I"ll probably have an avairy
vet show me this but more information is better and a bunch of you
probably know a heck of a lot more about this that I!

Do you need special clippers or will human toe-nail clippers work.
For wings, to sissors work fine, and which (and how many) wings tips do
you clip (and how far from the body should they be clipped to?)

Thanks.

To clip the toe nails it's "best" to have a nail clipper made for this. You
need to have a pro show you how first, and you need to have some "quick
stop" with you when you do it.
For wing clipping, again have a pro show you first. I use a pair of the
blunt nose scissors made for medics to cut clothing. They can be bought for
a few dollars, and work very well. How much depends on the bird, and what
you are after. With our Tiel, it's a lot harder to "ground" him than the
Macaw. With our Macaw I normally do 5 or 6 primaries, about half way. If he
gets scared and jumps off his stand which is about 6.5 ft off the floor he
can slow himself enough to not crash. Outside in the nice weather if he gets
to where he can make it more than 20ft of so I take a little more off. I
have had to run after him to the neighbors yard a couple times in the past
while trying to get the clip right <G>.
You need a good Avian Vet, have them show you how to do the clip, and take
it from there.

If at first you don't succeed blame someone else and seek counseling.
