Miniature Macaws - Info Requested

Post by Tammy Roncadori - Administrator Sun Vienna V » Tue, 17 Aug 1993 23:44:29

Hi All --

We are in the process of obtainig information on Yellow-collared and
Severe Macaws.  From everything we have read and seen, this is the type
of bird for us.  We would like to visit local breeders but, are unable
to obtain information (can't find Bird Talk or other related magazines
in the Northern ***ia area!!).  Does anyone know of any breeders in
the ***ia, DC, Maryland, NC, West VA, Penn (I think that covers it)
area? We are in no hurry, we just want to adopt a healthy baby.

Also, does anyone know of breeders who would be willing to teach some-
one with interest, but little experience about handling large birds,
such as macaws? Ideally, we'd like to get some experience handling and
feeding this type of bird before just picking one out of a hat, so to
speak.

Thank you --

Tammy

Here's what I've got:

BIRD TALK
Subscription Dept.
P.O. Box 57347
Boulder, Colorado
           80323-7347

1 year (12 monthly issues)  $25.97
2 years (24 monthly issues) $42.00

Payment maybe included or they will bill you.

I highly recommend this magazine.  I am now reading GUIDE TO A WELL-BEHAVED
PARROT by Mattie Sue Athan.  It cost me $8.95 at a book store in PA.  So far
I really like the book and I wish I could have read it BEFORE I got my
Lovebird.  She may not have turned out to be such a spoiled brat. :')  As I
read this book I say: 'No wonder she behaves this way.' 'Oh boy, I messed
that one up.' So anyway, I would suggest this book before the bird. :')

BREEDERS: (from Bird Talk magazine)

MARYLAND
--------

Parrots Plus                Cherrywood Aviary         Berger's Baby Birds
700 Crain Highway S.E.      Rt 10, Box 242            Street (must be some
Glen Burnie                 Salisbury                      place in MD)

410-760-8999                410-749-1579              410-836-0579

***IA
--------

Wilson's Parrots          (no name given)
Alexandria

703-642-3720              703-690-2532

PA has quite a few and FORGET WV. But I'm finding the prices in Ohio and PA to
be a bit high.  If you don't have any luck with the above, let me know and I'll
send you some of the one's listed in PA.

I found 1 person in Ohio just across from Wheeling WV who quoted me $950 for a
Yellow Nape Macaw if you take over the hand feeding and it would be higher
for the one's he has to finish.  If you find this price to be appealing, let
me know and I'll give you his phone #.

Hope this helps get you started!  Good luck!

What an excellent book.  I bought it along with my lutino***atiel,
and the advice in it has been invaluable.  My***atiel is a little
too laid back to need some of the more serious training, but I'm
currently shopping for a larger bird largely due to the influence of
this book.  I recommend it to everybody.

Hi Sheri --

Thank you for the info!!  Will definitely get the book (love those
highly recommended items).  What kind of bird(s) do you have?

Oh, I think the PA price is a bit high, don't you?

Again, thank you --
