Moving Pet Parrot from the US to Australia

Post by John » Wed, 01 Jan 2003 05:40:16

Hello, we will be moving in about a year from California to Australia
(Canberra or Sydney) and we would like to take with us our 6 year old
Senegal Parrot.  We cannot even consider leaving him behind.

Did anyone ever travel or move to Australia with a bird?  Could you
please tell me what is involved and how it is done?  I realize that it
is not easy but I hope that it can be done.

I have read that Australia does not currently allow importing bans but
I don't consider our situation "importing a bird".  We are just
returning to Australia after living in the US for several years.

Any suggestions or feedback will be greatly appreciated - even if it
just moving a bird to any other country.

You ARE NOT TAKING THE BIRD TO AUSTRALIA.

IF YOU ATTEMPT TO DO SO, YOU WILL NOT PASS GO, YOU WILL NOT COLLECT
$200, YOU WILL HOWEVER GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL.

LIVE BIRDS MAY NOT BE IMPORTED FROM THE USA TO AUSTRALIA, PERIOD, END,
STOP.

IT IS VERY HARD TO  EVEN BRING AN AUSTRALIAN BIRD BACK TO AUSTRALIA!!

They can be brought in if they were hatched and have only lived in the
New Zealand, the UK, and one or two Scandanavian countries.  Even then
the Quarantine charges will make you think twice. It's been a few
years since I checked, but the bill if you could do it was about
$1500.

For more information, you can contact the Australian Quarantine and
Inspection Service (AQIS).  The last numbers I have for them are
+61 3 93383344  or +61 3 92466777

The Quarantine facility is in Spotswood Victoria IIRC.

And even if it was allowed, I'd doubt very seriously they would let
someone bring a bird from California in to their country. Newcastle
disease would put an end to any entertaining of the idea.
