Advice needed:Conures and egg laying

Post by Angela Zuzi » Tue, 16 May 1995 04:00:00

My golden crowned conure, Hurricane, laid an egg this morning (maybe last
night--it wasn't there before we went to bed but was there when we
awoke!).  This is her first, and we have a vet appointment this Friday.
What do I need to do, if anything?  Tempest, my quaker who is the only
other bird at home, is only about 10 months old, and has not been sexed.
I think it would truly be a miracle if the egg hatched, since Hurricane
has not been shy with Tempest, but Tempest has not been interested in
"playing" with Hurricane.

What do I do about this egg?  Hurricane is VERY defensive of her nest, and
I don't want to take the egg away, making me the mean old human.  Should I
just leave her and her egg alone, since she has been eating and shows no
sign of being in any kind of distress.  Or should I nip this in the bud,
take the egg, and hope she'll get over it.  Should I expect more than one
egg in this clutch?  She is still trying to get Tempest "involved".  How
long will this continue?

How will I know if it is a hatchable egg?  If there is the chance that we
have an offspring here, I would do whatever it takes to help Hurricane
raise the new baby.

Hurricane and I would appreciate any advice!

It's probably not fertile.  Amazing, isn't it? :)
