Exterminators

Hi all...

We've got ants!  Those big *** carpenter ants!  And dad's got an
exterminator coming later today.  They 'say' that it's safe for the birds,
and they'll be ok if outside, or in their room with the door closed.  But of
course I'm nervous and concerned.

I guess I'm wondering how long I should keep them outside, or shut up in
their room.  it's cloudy and chilly today (60's) but I can keep windows open
for as long as it takes.  Any suggestions for us?

M&M are doing great.  Mollie's been doing the 'horn dog' dance, and Mel's
very intrigued by her noises...but clueless as to what to do about it, so he
just bites her!  He's still a little brat, but sings to me all the time and
wants to be on my shoulder...just won't let me give scratchies.  I'm
resigned to the fact that he's just a curmudgeon and just likes to hear
himself talk!!  (shoulda called him Jack)

I faced a similar problem when carpet beetles invaded my aparyment building.
The exterminator was planning to use a bomb, which according to the
exterminator would be harmless after a few hours. I demanded to know what was
in it. The exterminator and landlord were not eager to provide the information,
So it took tenacity,  and a call from my attorney,  to get the information.
Then I called the avian vet for advice. What she told me was different from
what the exterminator told me.

I took my birds on a trip for a couple days. When we returned, I aired out the
apartment for a day  before bbring the birds inside.

Laurie,

Take your birds to a friend's house for a couple of days and let the
house air out.  We have a person on this board (the other Janet - are
you there?) who had a *** experience with her Hahn's macaw when her
apartment was sprayed for ants unexpectedly to her.  The bird almost
died and was very sick for quite a while. Luckily, they were able to
pull it through.
