U.S. Customs & Birds

Post by Cathy & Terry McKeo » Sun, 04 Jun 1995 04:00:00

A friend of mine will be moving to the U.S. in the coming months. She has 3
***atiels and 4 budgies and is worried that they would not survive a
quarantine.  Could anyone tell me if there is a quarantine, and if so, how
long a period of time it is? She would rather find homes for them here than to
worry about them surviving a quarantine as all the birds are hand tamed.
Anyone have any experience with bringing a bird into the U.S. from Canada?
Thanks for any info.

This is just a guess, but check with US customs, they may allow a _home
quarantine_.  They do for pet birds taken out of the US, then brought
back in.

Cathy & Terry,
I believe that pet birds can be quarantined "at home."  I would recommend
that you contact the law enforcement division of the Fish & Wildlife
Service.  They will either be able to tell you the regulations or refer you
to the appropriate person who does.  There's probably a 1-800 number you
could call, but I don't know it offhand.   The number for the office here
in Minneapolis/St. Paul is 612-725-3530.  I have talked to these people
before and they were very nice and very helpful.
Best of luck,
