Cover cage at night or not???

Post by dennisel.. » Sat, 13 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I notice that when I cover my lovebird's cage entirely at night he crawls up
to a corner literally "clings" to the side to sleep...If i only cover about
half of it up he sleeps standing on a prich near the top...Is it better to
just cover half of the cage up???Does he cling to the side way up in a
corner because he's scared???Any info would be appreciated....

I cover almost all of my birds' cages.  I leave most of the back open so a
little light can come in and keep night frights away.  Cinder sleeps on a large
toy in the corner of her cage, and Fred sleeps on the side of the cage near the
top in the corner.

I coer my tiels cage part way- the front gets covered, and the sides only
get covered 2/3 of the way.  I have one of my terrarriums on at night, so
he has extra heat & light from that.  He doesn't like te dark at all
(hisses), but if we don't cover him, he usually doesn't sleep, or as soon
as the sun rises he does too :).  WE cover for his health (so he does get
sleep), and our sanity :)

I don't cover Homer's cage.  He sleeps in an upper corner on one of those
twisty rope perches.

Again as in so many questions, I think it depends on the bird. Mo we cover
completely. Lucky seems more comfortable with just the top of the cage covered
and a night-light. I would guess (not being an expert) that covering half the
cage and having him sleep on the perch is best for your little fellow.

Cover cage at night or not???

This is a very interesting subject; one I like to bring up now and
again.  My birds (7) used to be covered every night and their sleeping
cages were lined up in a row in my bedroom.  It was working well .. a
couple of night-fright episodes with the Senegals but only every few
months.  Well, I moved out of the house and took my TAG with me.  My
husband now says he doesn't cover them completely.  He leaves the faces
of the cages uncovered.  About six months ago our Conure would start
"tunneling" trying to get out of her cage.  It looked like a dog digging
a hole.  Mike started leaving the face of the cages uncovered and this
behavior stopped as abruptly as it started.

In my apartment, I put Gus in a sleeping cage (much smaller than his day
cage) with a dark blanket over it in a different room.  He doesn't make
a peep all night.

This "clinging" does sound as if he's frightened of something.  Is he in
your bedroom?  Maybe if you put the cage he sleeps in (if different from
his day cage) in your bedroom where he can see you it might settle him
down.  Seems to have worked for our conure.

This is true also. In the beginning we didn't cover Lucky at all, but I think
because he saw Mo getting covered he felt left out soemhow. He would fuss until
we (duh) figured out what he wanted. Again, I think different birds like
different things...includong whether or not to be covered.
