Help! My Lovebird keeps nipping me

Post by Cyndy Schim » Thu, 23 Jun 1994 00:22:56

My Lovebird has decided all of a sudden while she is sitting on my
wrist to go along my skin and take little nips...not big open mouthed
bites, but little nips that break the skin.  I then have a welt for a
few hours on each little spot.  It almost resembles a mosquito bite.
I have no idea why she has started this and it hurts!  She also does
it to my neck if she is on my shoulder.  I need advise as to how to
break her of this habit.  Needless to say, it makes one a little
reluctant to hold her when she does this.  Since I got her (1 month
ago) she has been a very affectionate, loving bird (hand fed).  She is
a little over 3 months old.  The only thing that has changed in her
life is I had her wings clipped last weekend.  I can't imagine what
the correlation would be but if anyone has any advice I would love to
hear it.  Thanks!

One of my lovebirds, who I have had for a long time, grooms me.  He is
reasonably gentle, but it can hurt, and does sometimes leave welts.  It
took me a while to figure out where the welts were from, I guess I didn't
notice it at the time.  I generally shout loudly, and pull away when it
hurts; the bird catches on quickly.  My other bird, however, enjoys
periodically taking a chunk of skin from my neck; we haven't resolved
that yet.

My lovebirdie is convinced that those weird-looking fingernails really
should come OFF!  She also likes to munch on my ear, but hasn't done
any damage.  She hasn't broken the skin, but she does like to beak me--
I think it's just weird lovebird-type grooming of some sort, too.

With the heat wave we have been having in Denver, I thought I should
pull up my hair and put it in a type of "bun."  Looked nice, all was
well and then....Lucille (YCM extraordinaire) thought the ears were
some foreign body that should immediately be removed.  Needless to
say, this is not the first wardrobe/fashion change that I have
had to incorporate into my life since Lucille entered my life <g>.
