are KINGS cages unsafe?

Post by Nicol » Thu, 17 Dec 1998 04:00:00

have any of you ever heard that KINGS cages are unsafe (contain zinc in the
metal)?  i am having such a hard time finding a cage for my new grey.  i
called expandable habitats but it will be several months before they can get
one to me and i need one in 2-3 weeks.  in the meantime this man at a store
told me kings cages are unsafe and i should get my senegal out of his asap
since he bites the metal (which is no longer covered by their safe paint
because he's chipped it off).  he wanted to sell me an acrylic cage but i
don't like them.  so i called the pet bird report and all they would say is
they "don't recommend" kings cages, but she wouldn't say why.

my vet says he's never heard of a problem with kings but then i found out
he's never heard of the pet bird report either!  (only birdtalk)

of course i'm in a virtual panic because of time restraints and the worry
that my senegal is getting zinc poisoning.  and i don't know where to get
unbias information, so thought i'd try here.  any help???

p.s. i am not good at using the internet and would appreciate if you could

downloading threads.

thanks so much,  nicole

This is news to me! I have 4 birds living in individual King's cages.
One of the 4 cages is several years old and the paint is pretty chewed
up. The other 3 are about 2 years old and still in very good condition.
I've never had a problem but guess I need to do some checking on this
myself!

Seems I read somewhere that there was a problem at one time with their green
paint. They must surely  have corrected the problem by now. But, don't hold me
to this statement.

some people don't trust KINGS and they aren't recommended by sally
blanchard -- i'm going to have mine tested for zinc in the metal which i've
heard you can have done at a university or place where they test water.  it
costs around $14.  certainly worth it for me!
