Update on Sorath's trip to the vet, and my subsequent guilt trip

Hi everyone,

Just letting you know, Sorath's skin thing wasn't skungy bacterial anything.
It was she managed to get thermal burns, looks like it is from her heat lamp
was too close to the basking spot, and the temps were too high.

Upshot is, she got a shot of an antibiotic, which she hated, and she has
antibiotic ointment, which she hates, and she is getting her cage converted
to an ICU for burn victims. She goes back next week for a followup visit and
maybe another shot. Plus I get to anoint her with betadine tea daily. (Also
a hateworthy routine).

And, she doesn't get to get let out and run around until the temperature
here is in the upper 80s, so that she doesn't get chilled and lose her
immune system.

And then to top it all off, today she lost a couple spines because she got
tangled in the miniblind cord while climbing around, and the spines broke.

The good news is, she still eats like a pig.

I am about to die of guilt and I feel terrible about all this. Less than a
week of what looked like she was maybe starting a weird looking shed, and it
wasn't.

Everything in the cage is getting moved around, so that temps are perfect.
Whatever the vet says she needs, she gets. Double.

:( Poor girl! I'm sure you'll nurse her back to health in no time.

I highly recommend the purchase of digital indoor/outdoor thermometers,
cheap at your local wal-mart. I want an IR heat gun, too, but no money for
toys. :|

Cheers to Sorath's health! Hooray for good vets!

Thanks for the suggestion. As one of the highly clueless, I didn't even know
there was digital indoor/outdoor thermometers, let alone consider them for
the cage. I was thinking of just hitting the dollar store and loading up on
those cute fridge magnet thermometers with flamingos and whatnot for
decorations.

OH, and the vet I use is Lakewood Animal Hospital, Lakewood Ohio. Halleluja,
we have an ***s vet here, four blocks from my house. :)

Now I have caresheets from the vet to read. :)

For the record, she said the basking spot should be 85 degrees.

Yup. I was born there in 1959. I only lived in the Cleveland area for
six months before my family moved to Los Angeles. (I now reside in Troy,
MI, near Detroit.) I do have some cousins in the Cleveland area.
