Feeding a tortoise Opuntia ellisiana Burbank Spineless (Prickly Pear)

I keep reading about how to get rid of spines on ***ly pears.  In
the wild, wouldn't tortoises just eat the whole thing?

Why buy spined ***ly pears when the spineless variety is available?

Not being a wise guy, trying to figure this out.

I offerred a ***ly pear pad to Cleopatra (an ancient beauty -- a
desert tortoise registered with the California Department of Fish
and Game).  I also offerred her a ripe fruit from the plant.  Both
were trimmed to remove the spines.  She was not interested.

Cleo does like an occasional nibble of Christmas cactus
(Schlumbergera).  What she really prefers, however, are rose petals
and grapes.  Cleo wanders freely in my backyard, grazing on the
lawn and various flowers.
