Mangroves can get upwards of 4 feet.  They aren't particularly tame -
but they aren't as mean as niles can be either.  I have one, he's not
aggressive, but he's not very calm around people, either.  He is quite
a climber.

Mangroves are better tempered than a goulds or argus.  Argus's don't
like being handled, though they never bite, they tend to whip with there
tails.  Goulds are very expensive monitors!  somewhere in the range of
600+dollars and are hard to find.  I personally don't like mangroves for
there looks.  Argus are beutiful monitors!  Another one you might
consider is the water monitor Varanus salvator,  they tame down like
puppy dogs but grow very large.  almost double the two you are
considering, they max out at about 7ft.  Ornate niles are cheap and
beutiful.  Get them young and you can tame them down.  Otherwise they
are MEAN.

hope it helps.

You are getting one without reading my book? <grin>

Average about 2 feet, big ones can get to 3.5 or 4 feet total length.

 what's their temper?

A bit jumpy, like to hide, hate to be handled.

According to recent evidence, gould's and argus monitors are the same
species. Argus are very very fast in everything they do. They get 4 to 6
feet and are a bit aggressive. Mine bites. They are also quite smart.

Much of what you asked here IS in Giant Lizards, however, I disagree with
some of it. For instance, this book claims mangrove monitors "block" from
eating mice...nonsense! I find mangrove monitors to be the most "regular"
monitors I have ever seen.

Any other questions feel free to e-mail me.

cheers,

I have to agree with Mike on the regularity of mangroves, mine would shit
on me every time I picked it up!!  :(  There are few things that I hate
more than projectile whit from a monitor!!!!! They are voracious eater but
very tense. I only had one that bit but all of them hated to be picked up.
