GOULD'S MONITORS-OTHER MONITORS

Post by Samuel Chennau » Sat, 24 Jun 1995 04:00:00

A couple of months ago I picked up a young Gould's Monitor
(Varanus gouldii) to add to my monitor collection (including salvator,
albigularis, dumerelii, and indicus) and this species is probably the
most intelligent, interesting, and beautiful animals I have ever owned.
Does anybody else out there keep this species? How about other monitors
(aside from the boringly commonplace exanthematicus)? Anyone with any
Papuan Tree Crocodile Monitors (salvadorii)? I'm interested in purchasing
one and I would like some info from fellow keepers. I'm basically looking
for any response from anyone who shares my affinity for monitor lizzards.

                                                           thanks,
                                                         Ryan Wood

You might want to look at a Varnus panoptes also know as the Argus monitor. They are
similar to the goulds, in fact for a long time they were considered a sub-species of
the gould.

My son has a pair of Timor monitors.  They are pretty cool, they stay small
(around 20") and are very shy.  They are tree dwelling and feed on mealworms
crickets, slugs, and pinks and fuzzies.  He likes Goulds the best.  Has anybody
been to the Dallas Zoo?  We went there last year and went in the service area
with Dave Roberts.  They are hatching Goulds like crazy!!!  They have an incredible
collection of monitors, Grays, Parenti(sp), Goulds, Green and Black tree, and Komodo.
We also met Winston Card.  It was a day well spent.
