I have a medium size Sav. Monitor and I currently feed him mice.
I was wondering if I could feed him a rat.

I personally favor mice for this species because they seem to be easier
for them to digest.

What about adding king mealworms into the diet for variety?

Variety is the spice of life...do it! The only advantage to small rodents
is that if they are solely used, I have never observed any monitors to
show dietary deficiency diseases. Insects as a sole diet can be dicier if
not properly vitaminized. But used as variety is fine and I say so in my
book. I prefer not using rats, however, because they are larger and seem
to be more difficult for many monitors to digest (unless VERY large, like
some huge water monitors or Komodo dragons).

I have to disagree with this, I have kept a Savannah Monitor for 3
years now, He is 3.5 ft long and has been feeding on med. rats since
he was just under 3 ft long. No regurging, no other problems so if the
monitor is of proper size I belive that rats are not a problem.

This may be, but my favor of smaller rodents extends to several very
experienced monitor keepers. However, as we all know, there is no one
correct way, we just propose what worked best for us.
