Night Heat Question

Post by Tina Adam » Mon, 01 Jun 1998 04:00:00

I have just moved to a new apartment where the temperature in my lizard's
tank gets too cold at night.  I didn't have this problem in the apartment
that I just left.  So, now I need to get a night-time heat source.  What
night-time heat source is best to get for the Longtail Lizard?  Also, what
can I do to keep the tank warm enough at night until I can get the
heat-source?

Thanks in Advance for any Help.

I'm not familiar with Longtail Lizards, But for night heat I use ceramic
heaters in some of my cages and heat pads in the others. The heat pads don't
warm the whole cage up too much, but they do provide an area where my herp can
go warm up if it gets too cold.

I'm not familiar with these lizards, but I use ceramic heating elements
to heat a variety of herp habitats. Just make sure that the animal can't
come in contact with the CHE. I have put wire screen over some of mine.
Also, what

Do you have a human heating pad? Put the tank on top of it and set
the temperature to low. Put a thick towel or cardboard between the
pad and the furniture to prevent damaging the surface.

The ceramic heaters work fine.(ALSO VERY EXSPENSIVE)
But!!! do not place it where your lizard can come into contact with it
because your lizard will get burned very bad!
What I do for my snakes is use heating lamps, both day and night lamps.
I also have have a heat strip I bought from a pet shop under one side of
the tank.
On very cold nights I place a towel over half of the tank and lamps on
the other side (DO NOT LET THEM TOUCH) this works real good.
Also you should invest a digtial temp thermometer with a temp alarm it
will let you know if the tank is to hot or to cold because you set the
hi/lo temps.
good luck

PS: Its great to own herps but when using
all the heating sources make sure you invest in some smoke detectors and
do not over load outlets.

If you would like a heat source that is safer, is less expensive to operate,
longer lasting, provides a basking sight and thermogradient with one unit
and provides physiological benefits unavailable from other types of heaters,
