Badly Injured Slider

I found this injured slider in the road. Somebody a few cars up ran
him over. It looked to me as if the guy aimed for him, but I can't be
sure of that. I spotted the turtle a few seconds before and had
already decided to stop and move him out of harms way.

I called the Jax herp society. With in one hour they had somebody out
to my house from across town. He looks bad, but they told me he will
probably make it. I don't really know much about turtles. I am more of
a snake a lizard person as of yet, but he was pretty active so I have
faith that they were not meerly trying to comfort me.

"york" <they told me he will probably make it. I have faith that they were

ONLY a froot-loop would imagine that professional Vets would lie about a
Turtle's prognosis because they were afraid that you might have a
"breakdown" or perhaps a "seizure" if they told you "the truth."

JESUS, GROW UP HOMIE.

First place to check on a MV ed turtle is the shell at the sides (the bit
that holds the carapace to the plastron), any cracks in this area usually
are a good indicator of internal damage.
Otherwise even large cracks as pictured on your mates carapace can be
repaired by "bridging"

I scooped up a large healthy-looking painted turtle a few weeks ago, and
moved her out of the middle of the road (they seem to universally think
laying eggs in dirt roads elevated between marshes is a Good Idea around
here). This one had apparently been doing this a long time: she had a
huge healed over scar in her carapace

So even if it looks amazingly bad, I agree, they can apparently recover
okay.

What surprises me about this story, is that somebody leapt into action
that fast and drove across town for one humble turtle (I assume this is
in an area where sliders are native). Neat.

The Jacksonville Herp. Society is a great bunch.  They are very active and
attentive.  I always enjoy chit chatting with members that frequent local
shows, such as the one coming up on Sept 11 and 12.  Very knowledgeable
group.

Here's the info on it.  I love Gila Production shows, always a nice
selection of venders, stuff going on and they advertise very well.
