Excessive grooming

I just subscribed to this newsgroup, so I don't know if this
subject has been brought up.  Our 13-year-old gray tabby,
Beezus, has always been a bit of an over-groomer, but recently
it has gotten out of hand, and I think this is why: Last
summer, we let a neighbor's cat--and a neighbor's cat's fleas, we
found out--in our house.  Of course, the fleas spread, and we've
been able to wipe them out using various methods and
materials.  So, our cat and house are flea-free, but her
grooming is such that she***s off large patches of fur and
leaves open sores, particularly on her back and the undersides
of her legs.  I think she thinks she still has fleas, sort of
like the phantom itch that amputees get.  We've put a large wide
collar on her to prevent her from reaching those places, and
sprayed on Dermasil to heal up the sores, but she still manages
to get at some places and leaves them raw.  We're about to take
her to the vet, but in the meantime, does anyone have
suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Chris
