About 2:00 this afternoon Amber started twitching her legs.  I made a
vet appointment for 3:45.  When I put her in the carrier she had stopped
breathing.  The vet tech confirmed that she was gone.  I left her to be
cremated.  I'm glad that she died peacefully.  She left a big hole in my
heart.  We had lived together for over 18 years.

My sympathy.  Yes, a loved one always leaves a big hole.

Having just lost Emily at a similar age I feel your pain. I'm a great
believer in getting a new kitten ASAP it really helps

I have to wait and see what effect Amber's leaving has on Tiger.  If I
do get another cat it would have to be a middle aged cat.  I am too old
(83) to get a kitten.  It would easily outlive me!

Again, I'm very sorry for your loss, Mike.

I agree you need to keep Tiger in mind.  He might not like some young
whipper-snapper invading his (sadly no more their) territory.  I also
agree (if/when you deem it is time) about adopting a middle aged cat.
They need homes as much as kittens do, perhaps moreso.

I'm so sorry Amber is gone, but I am always glad when one of our beloved
furbabies dies a natural death.  Something similar happened to my sister.  I
drove her to the vet while she held Peaches, but she said "I think she's
gone" as we drove into the parking lot.  The vet confirmed it, and we left
her there for cremation.  It was a peaceful death, and I'm glad you were
with Amber at the end to see that she also had an easy passing.

I'm very sorry for your loss.
Some people say that you are lucky to have had them so long so it it must
be easier to let them go.
I have never found this to be the case, the longer I have them the more I
love them.

I'll offer my condolences along with everyone else.  How sad, but at
least it was quick.

Any pictures of her?

Thank you everybody for your kind thoughts.  Tiger doesn't seem to
notice (or care) that she is gone.  I sent Art a picture which I asked
him to post to the group.
