Why am I SOOOOO Stupid?????

Poor Granters got hurt tonight because I STUPIDLY, did not put the sparkly
toy away high enough. I was sitting on the couch reading and the sparkly toy
was in the box but not hidden enough and he got it. I saw it out of the
corner of my eye and was going to get it from him and he JUMPED off the
couch with it in his MOUTH! It jabbed him terribly when it hit the floor. Oh
my God, I was so worried he'd punctured his palate or something. He was
frightened something AWFUL and of course ran to under the bed (safe zone)
and wouldn't come out and I could hear him gagging a little and all I could
imagine was well, YOU can imagine and I was trying to get him out so I could
see if he was hurt badly and of course all I managed to do was frighten him
MORE. So I laid on the floor and talked to him. He didn't seem to be in
physical distress, just scared. I finally got him out and he seems OK. He
ate some deli ham fine and we laid on the bed and played with a SOFT stick
for a while and he has just left my lap to go lay on his cat mat, walking
with his tail up, so I think he is fine. But OH was I scared!!! And my poor
Mr. Kabuki face was sooooo scared. And all because I should have put that
toy way away. And it HAD to have hurt something fierce. So just be sure
everybody to put those stick toys way away when you are not playing with
them with the cats.

Oh no Karen!  I've done things like that too, and remembered the lesson
well.  Last night a pyrex dish was laying on a hot burner on my stove.  It
shattered, luckily Mutt was in the living room.  She hauled ass to the same
safety zone and I had to drag her out to check for glass shards.  It makes
you want to break down in hysterics at the thought of "what could have
happened".  Double-ly lucky my daughter was in her bedroom, way out of
range.

Hugs over your big scare and lots of scritches for the sore throated one.

Grace

It's stick, about 12 inches long with short pieces of tinsel that bush out
of it and it is Grant's very favoritist toy in the world. Usually, when I am
not being stupid, I put it up in a pitcher in the kitchen. He can hear me
get it out no matter how quiet I am from the other end of the apartment! It
is the true test of sickness. If the cats won't play with the sparkly toy
there is something *wrong*. Poor baby.

Thanks Grace. It is enough to give one grey hairs (more of them anyway :)
I'm glad Mutt and your daughter were safe! That can be really terrible. You
too. Those things can take your eye out.

Hugs back,

I'm sure it scared you as badly as it did him!  And thank goodness he wasn't
hurt!  I'll bet you will be in the amrket for another toy though.  He may be to
freightened to play with it again if he's like Oscar.  Oscar had a game he
would play by pulling on one of those eleastic things you put on the door knob.
He would stretch it out as far as it would go and then watch it snap back.  He
loved doing that!  Well one time he wanted a real good snap and he kept pulling
and pulling, he had the damn thing pulled out over 15 feet.  Well, the elastic
broke and it snapped him in the ass!  It just about killed me to keep from
laughing out loud.  But he has never played with that kind of toy
again........will not play with a toy that fights back!

I wonder about that. I think what I'll do is not use it for a couple of
weeks and then see. Truly, I was really what he got most scared of! I guess
cause I was already moving to get him when it happened. He was *actually*
afraid of me :(    So I don't think he associates the incident with the toy,
but rather ME :( *sniff*   But he came up to me all on his own later and
*** footed some of my ***age to putty so I think I am forgiven (yeahhhh!)

Poor Oscar! Toys are Dang-er-ooose!

I think I almost feel more sorry for you Karen than I do Granters. I
know what its like to feel responsible for something your kitty gets
into and in my case I never saw it coming. Hobbes was a kitten and had
gone into our garage to play. He apparently chased a moth onto the hood
of my Chevy Blazer, over the roof and wasn't watching where he was going
so he slid off the other end. He caught his leg in the bumper of the
Blazer and couldn't get loose. He scraped the fur from his leg and I was
afraid he had broken a bone. Fortunately, no broken bones. Unfortunately
for Hobbes, it was the last time he was allowed in the garage. Poor baby
was so frightened when it happened that he lost control of his bladder
and he peed all over my Blazer and then bit my husband when he tried to
rescue Hobbes.

I of course blamed myself for having let him go out there. I'm sure
Granters will forgive you ... after the appropriate amount of sympathy,
treats and scritches from you of course.

Sending extra scritches from myself to Granters and headbutts from
Hobbes and Selena.

Julie, Hobbes and Selena

awful experience. I know it was long ago, but I send skritches belatedly.

Karen,

There is no way in the world you could have possibly forseen what would
happen to Granters.  I am sorry he hurt himself and he deserves a ton of
sympathy, but I don't think it was your fault at all.

The best we all can do is try to make things as safe as possible for the
cute little furballs and hope for the best.  (a lot like children that way,
don't you think?)

Besides, can you imagine the ugly looks you would get if you tried to pack
them in cotton?  <g>

Good thoughts going out to both you and Granters.

Hazel Az

thanks. He has recovered nicely. I have decided that sparkly toy will not be
used for a while so he does not associate it and lose the love he has for
this toy!
